Harken 6:1 Mainsheet System

The stacked mainsheet blocks work fairly well, but if you want to rake your mast back the room to do so is limited. To make more room, install a set of these low profile blocks. While these blocks are available from 5:1 to 8:1, the primary choice for our Hobie 16 was either the 5:1 or 6:1. The 6:1 is available with either 2.25 or 3 inch blocks. The 5:1 is only available with 2.25 inch blocks. The 5:1 set is priced at $184.90 US, the 6:1 2.25 inch set at $211.00, and the 6:1 3 inch set at 262.80. Note that the larger diameter sheet will not fit into the 2.25 inch blocks, so if you need to replace the sheet you may consider getting the 3 inch blocks and reuse your old sheet (which is plenty long enough). This gives you the 3 inch blocks at no cost over the 2.25 (in the case of the 6:1). I know, clear as mud. Anyway, we went with the 3 inch 6:1. Our only negative observation is a small amount of rust forming around the rivets after ocean sailing. Not a biggie, just a bit disapointing. Also, while a 6:1 purchase is easier on the arm, it is a bit troublesome trying to move that much rope pumping the sail

in gusty conditions. However, in these case you can retie the end of the rope and easily convert the blocks to a 5:1.

3M Safest Stripper

We needed to remove some old sun damaged stripes off the side of our hulls, but got tired picking them off an 18 foot hull 1/8" at a time. I'm always restoring some portion of our 1909 home. So, being very familiar with paint strippers, I tried experimenting with 3M's Safest Stripper. After testing on a small area to make sure no damage would result, we covered the entire stripe with this thick compound, then covered the stripper with a sheet of plastic

food wrap (to slow evaporation). After a 6 hour penetration time, the stripe pulled off easily. No damage to the gelcoat was noted. Also, this product does not emit those nasty fumes associated with other strippers.

Available at most hardware and home improvement stores.

Test in an inconspicious area. This product may damage some finishes.
