Regatta Notices: The Tybee 500, "An Affordable Challenge"

Added by damonAdmin on Apr 01, 2003 - 10:35 PM

Tybee 500

There is a new kid on the block when it comes to beachcat adventure. The first annual Tybee 500 distance race, to be sailed May 12-17, starts in the Florida Keys and ends up over 500 miles north at Tybee Island, Georgia. The six leg event is designed, in the words of the founder Chuck Bargeron,

"To give beachcat sailors a chance to find out what long distance racing is all about."
The race is setup to take full advantage of the capabilities of today's hot spinnaker boats, without requiring sailors to buy or charter a different boat than they usually sail. Sailors who want to test their skills will find a real challenge completing the 6 legs of the race.

Day 1 - Islamorada, FL to Hollywood, FL

Day 2 - Hollywood, FL to Jensen Beach, FL

Day 3 - Jensen Beach, FL to Cocoa Beach, FL

Day 4 - Cocoa Beach, FL to Ormond Beach, FL

Day 5 - Ormond Beach to Fernandina Beach, FL

Day 6 - Fernandina Beach, FL to Tybee Island, GA

The start at Islamorada will feature a water start, then the beach start positions for each team will be determined by their previous leg finish. All legs will feature morning starts, eliminating the night sailing that causes some sailors to avoid distance races. Classes will consist of 18 and 20 foot production catamarans with beams no more than 8.5 feet and spinnaker rigged by the factory, except as changed by the Notice of Race. Classes shall include, but not be limited to:

Inter 20 - factory spinnaker

Nacra 6.0 - New England 6.0 spinnaker

Hobie 20 - factory spinnaker

NAF 18 - factory spinnaker

Open - factory spinnaker rigged, Portsmouth .6300 or below.

According to Bargeron there is a good chance the list will be expanded to include a 18HT class from boats that had planned to do the now cancelled Worrell 2003.

"I want to see everyone have a good time, not just those at the front." Efforts will be made by the organizers to insure that participants will have a good time regardless of their finishing position. While this race will attract the most competitive racers, it's also a place for competent sailors to test their skills in a challenging and enjoyable setting. It's an "affordable challenge", both because of the reasonable entry fee of $500 and the one week time frame that makes it easier to fit into limited vacation time.
