I went sailing firday and saturday in Black water sound Key Largo and did fairly well, didnt tip over it was great I believe due to the fact that there was very mild winds 5 to 8 nodi however on sunday morning the wind picked up 14 and gusting to 18 knots I chiken out and did not go out, ok My question is will a smaler sail from a wave work on the getaway so that I can go and practice in stronger winds?

I don't believe you need a second sail, you should check into adding a couple of reefing points. This way if you are out and the winds pick up and become real strong, you can reef the sail to get back to port.

Second, you should flip the boat and practice righting it. Once you know how to do it, your confidence in handling stronger winds will increase.

Last item, go to hobiecats.com/community, they have both general and boat specific forums, someone there can might be able to give some advice on adding reefing points.
