I've never done this, but it does seem like there was a lot of
discussion before (maybe on Catsailor.com?). If I recall correctly,
the main issues were the luff rope pulling out of the plastic comp
tip track (as Bill described) and the need to hook the main halyard
(as described by Mars). In addition to Mars' comments, it was also
said that the cleat for the main halyard was not designed to take
the load of an unhooked main (which could be considerable in high-
wind, reefing conditions). This issue is resolved, of course, by
using the old style halyard, IF the nicopress fittings will go
through the new style sheaves (as described by GaryE....I never
would have thought of that potential problem!).
I have a newer rig and didn't reef when I had an older one. It took
a while for me to learn the effectiveness of travelling out, but
sheeting hard (for speed instead of power). Further, in
addition to the other suggestions above for coping with high wind, I
highly recommend ensuring that you've got the full mast rake
possible for your given rig (must be able to flatten mainsail just
before going block to block). This really settles the boat down in
the big stuff, reduces pitchpole tendency, and has minimal adverse
effect in milder conditions, once you're used to it. Of course a
newer mainsail and low-profile main blocks are needed to really rake
it hard.
