What do you do when the wind is lacking for excitement?  Bottom

  • Me, I fish!http://s1040.photobucket.com/albums/b404/diverteach/2011-10-23123136.jpg
  • I usually read, listen to the radio, sun tan and always fix things on the deck.

More importantly try and get ashore before the wind peters out.

  • Well, truth be told, I fish whether the wind is blowing or not from my H16. I'm going that way anyway so why not troll a line. The usual catches include mostly mackeral both kings and spanish followed by bonita's and an occasional mahi-mahi. Since the bonita's aren't worth eating but make GREAT bait, I'll rig it up as bait.

Now if I was willing to travel farther offshore it is quite conceivable that I could troll those same bonita's for blue marlin. I limit myself trying to stay within sight of land. Having said that the bonita's make for excellent shark fishing. If there's enough wind to move, then it's trolling for blacktip sharks. As was the case with the pictured shark, the wind completely died leaving me bottom fishing in which case I'll catch bull sharks. This one was 7 foot even and somewhere between 160-170 pounds.

It must be quite the sight watching me control everything when doing this as I'll have the tiller by the foot, fishing rod in one hand and handgun in the other.

If you look closely at my cat you can barely make out 3 fishing rods standing upright just forward of the front crossbar on the starboard side. I have a plastic milk crate clipped to the top of the hull. Pole holders are mounted to the side and the crate itself that takes seconds to take on or off also holds anchor, anchor line, small tackle box and my gun.

BTW, you can find me at Grayton Beach, Fl any given weekend.

  • There is always enough wind to sail. The only difference is how challenging it is to get the boat moving in the direction I want.

  • Swim, skinnydip, practice righting drills, paddle to an out-of-the-way place and try to get my wife to skinnydip, stare at my sails and wonder if they would survive the GT300, drink anything that is handy and contemplate why there is air.

  • If there's little or no wind, I leave the boat rigged on the beach, grab a Corona and fire up the reggae music while chillin' in my beach chair. It never fails, a pretty girl or two will inevitably wander by and either want a picture in front of my boat or a ride ("excuse me, sir, but do you rent this boat?). I sometimes oblige the pretty ones (if I'm solo that day) and its a great way to pass the time.

BTW, I was in Marco Island, FL all last week and had the boat out every day. I could have made a small fortune by renting out my boat. I was amazed by how many people would approach me with requests to rent it or get taken out for a ride. A great conversation starter.

  • Grayton_sailor, incredible! Ive caught blacktip and bulls in the 5- 6 foot range from a flats boat but at least with our light tackle those were sometimes 20 - 45 min battles which included running the shark down with the motor. The idea of landing one of those fish while under sail is unbelievable! and to top it off what looks to be a shark hanging from your mast!!! That's the kind of thing you read about on the back cover of Florida Sportsman! Kudos
