New to me 5.8  Bottom

Go to page 1 - 2 [+1]:

  • I just picked up a 82 Nacra 5.8. Bit of a project but not too bad, hulls are in good shape. Original sails look like new. Hulls had a couple places needing some glass work. One daggerboard was in good shape the other one needs to be rebuilt and is in process. I'm going to re-gel coat the boat next. I have been around sailing quite a bit but never owned a cat. I will need some help at some point with rigging, specifically main downhaul and mast rotation setup. I think I have most of the rest of the basic setup covered. But that will be a little while yet.http://www.thebeachcats.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=124519&g2_serialNumber=4

This is an older picture of the boat.

This is the day I brought her home.

Just wanted to say thanks for all the valuable information on here.

  • Update...
Trailer - Bearings repacked, Wire Brushed, Primed, Painted, New Lights, New Winch, Re-carpeted Cradles, trailer considered done for now...

Boat was sitting in the water for about 8-12 months. Barnacles and oyster growth in hulls and in the dagger board openings, oysters are a pain to remove fyi. Hulls are in good shape now.

Dagger boards & Rudders - In reasonably good shape, one of the dagger boards was damaged at some point and PO ground it down straight across so it was about 6 inches shorter than the other. Rebuilt with glass and filler and is now ready for gel coat.

Hulls - No large soft spots that I found
1 - Puncture where it looks like it hit a pole, hole was about 1.5" in dia through all layers, ground down, re-glass, filler and now ready for gel coat
2 - 2 stress points from the cradles where it was apparently set on the point of the cradle, ground down, re-glass, filler and now ready for gel coat.
3 - Multiple scratches down into the glass, one with spider cracking that when cleaned out revealed delamination in the glass that had to be cut out and repaired.
3 - 2 large blisters and many small bubbles in the gel coat at the waterline, there was some water in the hulls when I picked her up. All repaired.
4 - First hull is ready for paint and gel coat. I'm going to use total boat wet edge in flat gray for the decks and apply with a brush. Planning to gel coat the rest of the hull with a spray application.

New - Tramp, rigging, lines and the new style dolphin striker with pin. Replacing the lines will be interesting to figure out as I haven't owned a Nacra before.

    Any other suggestions are appreciated.

  • Your second photo, with all the marine gunk growing on the hulls, makes me glad,(sometimes), that I'm a freshwater sailor.
Do you have the Nacra manuals?

The titles might say 5.5 etc, but most of the information applies to all models.

  • Edchrist,
I have downloaded everything I can find. I still have questions on the main downhaul and the mast rotation I think at this point I have most of the rest. I will be reaching out once I get a little further and see if I am missing something.

I am lining up graphics and was thinking of the following. It is the newer logo with the retro color. Tnell has blue coming and I'm going to get a set from him but what do you think of this? The sail plan is the original pin top with red, orange, yellow, orange, red. The original graphics on the boat were red with pin striping that I think was red and orange, it was off the boat when I got it.

  • Replaced the mast base and the dolphin striker to the new style with the pin this weekend.

Had that "oh shit" moment when you realize the main traveler just ran off the end of the track and all the bearings ran for the hills. Managed to find 39 of the 40 little bastards though and got them back where they were supposed to be...

Shot gel coat on the rudders and dagger boards, rest of the gel coat ordered and should be able to shoot 1 hull next weekend.

you will quickly kill the other bearings with the wrong amount (over or under) of bearings. I would recommend repacing the lost one before sailing

  • I used a painters tool for as a scraper, a wire brush and some muriatic acid sparingly in a spray bottle on the tough spots. I think it came clean fine but revealed a very thin gel coat on the bottom of the hulls.

  • A gas pressure washer works wonders for removing gunk. Use it in a stripping motion, ie keep the jet on a shallow angle. Then a light sand with 600 or 800 wet/dry will remove very little & look shiny.
I think Philip Mumm had(has a 5.8), this is how he used to rig his downhaul. I use the same on my 5.7, but I only go 4:1, those old masts/sails I don't believe benefit from 16:1 etc. I have a "S" hook on the top of the V jam fiddle block. I just drop the hook into the cringle & pull the tension I want for the day. The more serious racers use exit blocks on each side of the mast, so they can adjust tension from the wire, either side.

What type of car do you have?
Is it a Harken, using the 1/4" (I think) Torlon balls?
I'm thinking yes, that sail pattern is the same as mine '84. I can't remember when they changed fro the Kenyon car, with 1/8" steel balls. They came with either two tone blue pinstripes, or orange/red.
You can buy the bearings at any dealer, in bags of around 10. If you only need one, I have a bunch, I can mail you one. The non-captive cars are easiest to get back on with a "loader, or short piece of track.Use shaving cream in the car to hold everything in place while you slide the car back on.

That pic is perfect and answers the question thank you! I am definitely missing the V jam fiddle block and the "S" hook.

The mast rotator is the other question I have, if you can weigh in on that, there is one pulley on the wishbone and each side of the cross beam has a the same hardware.

    http://www.thebeachcats.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=125573&g2_serialNumber=4

The traveler is a Harken with the torlon balls, I'll add a couple to the next order I make at Murray's.

    Thanks for the help...

    You just need a bit of line. I removed the rotator from my 5.7. It was useful downwind, but I'm not racing, & so don't care about an extra minute. It was also useful to prevent the mast from flopping around in flaky wind & shaking the air out of your sail. However, you must remember to release it as your first item. If you don't, you risk breaking the mast in big wind. If you are in a hurry to get on the water, ignore it for now, the boomless rig will self rotate except for downwind. I initially rigged like this;
    http://www.thebeachcats.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=74457&g2_serialNumber=7
That is a pretty crappy way to rig it though. Later on I went to a continuous line. Deadend at the eyestrap on beam-to end of rotator- back through cleat- around behind mast-through opposite cleat-to rotator-deadend on eyestrap.
That gives 2:1. I think i used 1/4" line, there is a fair bit of twisting force, & the 1/4" was easier on the hands.
That looks like the exact car we use on the 5.0, the 5.7 has one almost twice as long. From the end stop it appears to be the "non captive" type of car, as you discovered! Make sure the car/bearings are clean, & DON'T OVERFILL the cars with bearings. I think you can get 1 extra ball in there.
Here is some info, scroll to bottom.
    http://www.harken.com/traveler/
Maintenance-note, you don't need expensive One Lube, a drop of 3-in-1 oil works. Personally,(freshwater) I don't use anything.
    http://www.harken.com/uploadedFiles/Product_Support/PDF/4970.pdf
    Identify your car;
    http://www.harken.com/upl…ct_Support/PDF/M1012.pdf
Make sure you tie a stopper knot in your traveler line so the cart cannot quite reach the end of the track. If it does slam over, it will shear off that little stop & fly off the track. You won't lose the car, it's on the line, but all the bearings will become fish food.

Yes, and you don't need turning blocks, just some 3/16" line and you're good to go. Ed's spot on on the rotator and downhaul. Now if you want to trick it out, get an over-rotator and 16:1 downhaul. You can see pictures in my album doing it both ways.

Great boat, and I've got spare parts when the time comes. Enjoy!

I almost don't use it either, except to limit rotation when trailering the boat with the mast up or when I leave it on the water for a while. It always leave the boat with mast rotation locked actually.
  • Ray,
I have the boat torn apart currently and in the middle of a restore. I have applied gel coat to one hull and need to get motivated again. I have not sailed it yet. I am in Saint Cloud and East Lake Toho is only about 5 minutes from the house so that is where I plan to spend some time.

  • That's a good deal of work ahead of you. Let me know if I can lend any technical help/ information. In a small lake the 5.8 is a fun single hander, if you can believe it, lol. I've taken it out in 15mph plus gusts. Being over 200lbs helps!
