  • what a crazy race!

Part 1: Rules and Sailing Instructions
Responsibility:Competitors in this event are participating entirely at their own risk. The responsibility for a boat’s decision to participate in the race, or to continue racing, is hers alone. By participating in this event, each competitor releases the race organizers and officials from any and all liability associated with such competitor’s participation in this
event to the fullest extent permitted by law.

Short version: This is really dangerous, and all of us at R2AK central advise you not to do it. Really, turn around and go home to your labrador and a book, unless you are allergic to dogs, and then just the book

  • "No shelter, no crew, 750 miles of 50 degree water on a $500, 40 year old boat that looks like it sailed out of an episode of Baywatch. Dan and his Spartan solo hate mission are sailing north on a fast, exposed boat that essentially amounts to two canoes joined by a screendoor. “HOBIE!”

It takes a special kind of badass to want to sail engineless to Alaska, but someone who signs up to do it wet, cold and alone is a class by themselves."

  • Yea that guy is bad ass, but the guys that are in front sailing an M32 beach cat are even more bad ass. Sailing a cat that is as fast as that boat is with three guys, in the dark with no radar with logs floating around everywhere is serious business. Not to mention, if the Hobie guy leaves his old boat on the beach in the middle of nowhere, no one would care, but that M32 is worth serious coin. Damage it and you get to retrieve it first, then spend serious money for repair. I tried to get an idea today just how expensive this boat is by checking the website and see that to get a quote on the boat it is by request only, but if you want the carbon fiber mast fork over $42,000. A couple of carbon hulls and some sails and a bit of running rigging and you have to be way over $125,000 for a way fast beach cat. But they are setting a record pace.

There are lots of good stories here so log on to the R2AK website and enjoy.

  • Does anyone know the Hobie 16 Solo guy? Dan Isaacson, is making good progress according to the tracker.

Not sure how he is carrying enough food and water for the trip. Would like to know more about him and his attempt.

From the description of his entry from on R2AK.com

"Teams may resupply food / equipment, rent a room, do laundry, eat at restaurants, even service their boats along the way. The intent is to be un-supported between towns, and function self-supported when in towns. Any services utilized must always be available to all challengers and not pre-arranged. No private resupply, support boats, food drops, etc." (https://r2ak.com/faq/)
