Nacra 5.0 Batten Caps  Bottom

  • The 1983 Nacra 5.0 I'm restoring came with solid fiberglass battens. They look very similar to Hobie 16 battens. The leech endcaps on them are weathered to the point of needing to be replaced. Searching Murrays, I find no endcap specific to this boat or batten. I didn't actually try it, but it looks like a Hobie cap might work. What do most folks go with? Will a Hobie 16 cap indeed fit?

  • I'm pretty sure Murray's has a cap that will work, but might need some adhesive because I recall that they were looser than one would like. All my Battens are tapered foam with a fibreglass skin. No caps just 2 holes drilled through the battens.

  • Thanks Dave. My battens are solid glass. The profile is similar to this Hobie batten:

  • Your photo shows the factory type. I have both,(thanks to Jenna) solid & some hi performance foam battens.
    I'll take a photo tomorrow of how both the 5.7 & 5.0 are done.
    It's dark now, I sailed today, but came in early as wind was dying. Then beat the guts out of our poor little Seadoo. Went for a kayak near sunset, but got waylaid by a neighbor 3 docks down, & ended up in a beer fest.
    I have to be up at 0600 tomorrow to go pick up the deal of the century;

    That's like $70 US. The description is a little off, they are Florida Sailcraft Cat Trax, the real McCoy. Even with gas, & a case of good German beer, it's barely a boat buck!

  • Thanks Ed. Sounds like quite a day!!!!!!

    Here's the Hobie version I have always used and am very familiar with. The Hobie setup is very nice as the hole, tie line and jam cleat allow you to "tune" the tension easily as often as you like:

    The other choice is the TrenTec version:

    In my experience the TrenTec version is much more durable. The Hobie caps become brittle after a few seasons of exposure and crack at the jam cleat, ALWAYS right when you can't afford a failure (i.e. minutes before the start of a race and/or when you're daysailing and didn't notice that you were out of spares!!!)

    Later today I'll take a photo of the caps currently on my Nacra battens and post it here.

  • I was planning on replacing mine also. I was going to use the Hobie end caps, mainly because I have a bunch. I like the adjustability and the fact you can take the tension off easily for storage.

    Having reviewed the Nacra "hole through the batten tie a square knot" setup, I too plan to stay with the Hobie arrangement. Much easier to adjust and as you mentioned quick to release batten tension when the sails are being stored.

  • The N5.7 has battens like the right side of photo above. When some of them died I picked up as handful of caps from Murrays on a road trip to Carpenteria Ca.
    I don't have the invoice, so I can't quote thepart 3, but go back to the website, & look for part #http://www.murrays.com/12-7003.html
    I think that is a "pack", they can be ordered singly.
    I picked up a few & they fit the Nacra.
