Nacra 5.2  Bottom

  • Looking at purchasing a 1977 Nacra 5.2 and had a few questions for those more experienced. The boat has been sitting for the past two years outside and it shows. Dosent look like anything a good wetsanding/compounding/polishing couldnt remedy . My real question is with the hulls. Both are very solid where the cross beams attach and all the way up till the last three feet of the bow. When pressing in this area the hulls do flex (tin can?). How much flex here is acceptable since this is a glass boat and not foam cored. I know there is a stiffner in that area and can sort of feel it when pressing in. Looking from the outside it appears the front of both hulls have been painted with something other than gelcoat. This is making me a little nervous. I am willing to open the deck lids to repair if need be and figure the paint can be removed to get back to the gelcoat

Also the rudder has a bad spot on the bottom that may or may not be repairable.
The boat is missing the mainsheet tackle and possibly downhaul? tackle. Other than that new sheet and it would be good to go.

I will attach photos to make up for my lackluster job of describing the boat lol. Is this a worth while project? I am not afraid to do repairs to the boat just dont know if it is beyond repair. Also what would be a good ballpark estimate for a boat in such a condition??

    Thanks

  • I would offer something like $250 to $500 provided the major things are included, and depending the sails are in reasonable good condition. You might check to see what other boats of the same vantage are going for in your area. To replace the main sheet will cost $125 to $175. the N5.2 didn't come with much of a downhaul. As far as the rudders go they look repairable if you are willing to do the fiberglass work. even they come out rough you could still use them until you can found others to replace then with.

    GOOD LUCK !

  • I wouldn't worry too much about the hull flex. In 1977 they didn't use the foam core fiberglass so all there is is glass and not much stiffness reinforcing in the very front of the bows. THere are 2 stringers and some pipe like areas down the rest of the hulls. A fair amount of 'oilcanning' is normal. My 1980 5.2 does it like crazy, especially walking along the hulls when righting the boat. Price depends a bit on location, but in that condition and in the southern states, $500 would be about the max I would pay. Its a project boat and in texas (assuming from the boat numbers) you could probably find something in better condition.

  • I have several 5.2 parts from a boat we are parting out we would like to get rid of.
If you do this boat let me know I have rudder blades.
  • I second what those guys said. Mine is a '78 same construction. Not much to the hulls, unless you hear cracking when you press down you would be fine. I'd go 400-500 because it has a trailer.
The rudders can probably be repaired with a thick mix of marine tex, some sanding and a fresh coat of paint. But they aren't that hard to find as I've seen a lot of 5.2s hitting the part out postings lately. :(

I would start out with muriatic acid to clean the hulls or "klean strip". Then wax with fleet wax or something

Also, quickly replace those rollers with cradles on the trailer.
