Newb with a P16 in Ontario  Bottom

  • Hi all,

    Picked up a P16 recently (not sure vintage, but seems to predate mast hinge technology; stepping the mast was brutal) and just got it partially rigged. Quick question on the mast rake, a manual I found online states "Using the main halyard as a plumb, measure the distance from the aft edge of the mast at the black band to the center of the plumb" - I don't have a 'black band' so not sure where to measure from?

    Also, is there a simple schematic somewhere that shows how the lines are supposed to run? Particularly the jib as the manual I have talks about an "S" hook I don't seem to have, but I do have some kind of pulley system I haven't figured out yet.

    I have lots of monohull experience, but this is my first foray into the catamaran world - looking forward to getting sailing !

  • Forgot to add: What do I do with the side stays once the mast rake is set, just reef them on as much as possible?
  • You have probably '73-75 P-16 with the old mast base & step. Look on the starboard transom for a possible number last of which will be the year. Early jib halyards did not have S hook, but had wire luff jib like H-16. Actually easier to raise jib--be sure to use 3:1 near base of mast and pull it tight. Where are you located? Pete
  • Indeed, ends in "76" :) Looks like the jib will 3:1 on the mast - there's remnants of a pulley on the base of the mast, I thought it was for a main downhaul but perhaps it's for the jib halyard. I'm hoping to rig this Sunday (although Striker Casting hasn't shown up in the mail yet, and I think I need one!) and take pictures of the parts I'm not so sure about.

    I'm located up the Ottawa Valley, few hours from Ottawa.
  • If you do not have the flanged mast base casting & hinge, they are available from Murrays as are mast head pulleys. Pete
  • First sail was a blast !!! Although, apparently too much as I washed out the rubber stopper under the rear cross bar (pic below). Does this hole allow full access to the hull (i.e., if it submerges do I fill my hull up?)? I put my hand in and seems to be just a pocket but I'm not sure. I see murrays have plugs (which look quite different to what came out of mine), but any suggestions for alternates I could get from a hardware store? Duct tape?

  • Yes, duct tape good as anything. Send a pic of your mast step (on front xbar). Pete
  • Here's a pic of the mast step. What is the thing circled in red in the 2nd pic for? You may also notice my wooden striker casting; new one should be arriving soon from Murrays :)

  • The thing circled in red is a base for a swivel cam cleat. It looks like someone tried to move the Jib sheet cleats to the main beam like on a Hobie 16.

  • The swivel cam cleat was for a barbor hauler system to pull the jib leads outboard when sailing on a broad reach. Reason I wanted the pic was to see that your mast step will not accept a hinge. I have the later model mast step that will accept the hinge including the striker rod if you're interested. Text for pic. Pete 909-800-5237

    Take pete up on his offer if you can. He can hook you up with everything you need for the old boat. He has helped me out on quite a few parts.

    If you want a more permanent fix for the hole you can probably find something at the hardware store that will work and then caulk it in place. Heck even a big tapered cork.
