RIP Rick White, 1937 to 2017

Rick White died today after a brief battle with lung cancer.

Rick promoted, inspired, and instructed several generations of beachcat sailors and I'm sure lots of us have stories of close encounters with such a colorful character.

He was quite an inspiration and teacher for our hobby/sport. His book (Catamaran Racing: For the 90's) and videos have and will be long studied.

I had the pleasure of meeting him once at a regatta and learned so much for him in short amount of time. Without a doubt, he did more to promote and inspire catamaran sailing and racing than anyone I've ever known. To be around him was very humbling yet inspiring, he had a gentle way about him and was always approachable.
My heart and prayers go out to Mary and his family and he will be missed greatly but never forgotten in my mind. His passion and memory will live on through the countless folks he help.

Thank you Rick,
Fair winds and following seas.

Condolences to the family and friends of Rick White. I personally did not know him but that doesn't matter, and from what I have learned here he was a great advocate, teacher, mentor, and visionary for the sport of cat sailing and sailing in general. He was also a great friend, family man, and a good person and sounds like someone I would really would have wanted to know and have as a friend and mentor in my life, not only for sailing, but just life. Sail on Rick, Sail on...

QuoteI hope his signature race continues as a tribute to his memory. RIP.

he had many:

tradewinds in the keys where they held many classes and the wave nationals (that was not Hobie sanctioned) his rules allowed for some mods and other non stock things that improved performance

the steeplechase in s fl

races in Put in bay Ohio too (his summer home)

I took his racing class twice, and learned a ton both times. He was a great sailor and a very personable man. He will be missed.
