It has clear, clean water, and is not crowded, as Lake Travis can be, which is much nearer to Austin. Llano County Park is a free park, with minimal facilities. It is patrolled by the sheriff's deputies. It has a boat ramp which is OK till lake level drops below 1010, and a beach area that is good for catamarans regardless of lake level. The local Hobie fleet 64 from Austin holds a regatta at this park in April every year. Lake Buchanan is about 7 miles long, about 3 miles across. When the wind builds, wave conditions on this lake can be like a coastal bay.. Next to Llano County park is Blackrock Park, which has more facilities and a park host, but charges for them.
