I have been surprised in recent conversations about how people fit sailing into their lifestyle. This is a quite large audience, and should give us a broad picture of our favorite sport. We see answers to some of these questions in forums when some of us go off topic, so I thought to make it a topic.

I travel 30 miles, 30 minutes, to my spot.
Boat is stored there, mast up, on the beach
I do not spend the night, unless I sail out to an island and spend the night. No camping available
No fees, other than 2 dollar a day car parking May-August
I race in 2 charity races a year, not cut throat competition
Sail my Hobie 16 several times a week. Sail my Gcat 5.7 several times a year(Longer Trips, trailered out of town)
Both my cats are about 30 years old and I am 3rd owner of both but both have had light use till me, and I beat the heck out of them.
I prefer to have major glasswork done by a pro.
I have battery powered lights, I typically do not use GPS although I do own one
For me having 2 boats is key to finding time to sail. One on the beach ready to go, and one on the trailer ready to go out of town. Also, I find once you get a cat in good condition(parts, solid hulls, good sails) they tend to stay that way so its worth it to get them that way. -

A little cumbersome but still cool, I'll go:
1. How far do you travel to your favorite "local" sailing spot?
60 minutes for Tuesday night racing, 30 minutes for fun sailing, local lake and lake Michigan. Travel all over the state for weekend events.
2. Do you trailer to it, or is the catamaran stored there?
Trailer
3. Do you leave your rudders on while trailering?
I did on the 5.2, I ran support lines that hooked up to the rear crossbeam to take the load off of the transoms.
4. Do you daysail there, or camp overnight?
Daysail typically, camp for weekend events
5. Are fees for the day (or overnight) over $25 per day?
For camping and weekend regattas yes, campsite its usually around 30 a day.
6. Is your crew usually family or friend?
Solo for racing, anyone for crew when looking to have fun.
7. Do you race?
Yes 90% of the time.
8. What cat do you sail (most often)?
Nacra 5.2 and have recent been sailing an A class catamaran, Bimare XJ
9. How old is your cat?
10. Do you do most of the repairs yourself?
Yes, almost all of them.
11. Are you comfortable with fiberglass, metalwork, sewing or general fabrication.
Everything but sewing, I'm a product development engineering for a living so my prototyping history plays well into DIY projects for the boat.

Can't say, I don't want Damn to boot me. :) This is always the first go to though, espcially when I had the 5.2. There are other sites more active for the A class boats but this is the spot for all around beach cat info. Nice work Damon!

Negative on night lights, I'm usually in by then, the wind usually shuts off and dusk in Michigan.
GPS, I just run an app on my phone to track speed and trails compared to the wind. Raceqs. Nothing else.
14. Are you a member of a sailing group?
Yes, 3.

1. 10 minutes if I stop for gas… I have lived around water all my life…. Don’t think I could live anywhere else.

-Two point five hours to Lake Roosevelt, the favorite. There are two sailable lakes only an hour away.
There are two places in Mexico I would love to sail again, but far away (four+ hours) and getting more expensive all the time - San Felipe and Puerto Penasco (Rocky Point).
2. Do you trailer to it, or is the catamaran stored there?
-Trailer. Cat is stored in my yard.
3. Do you leave your rudders on while trailering?
-No. they have covers and live in the cat box.
4. Do you daysail there, or camp overnight?
-At Roosevelt I camp for a day or two. Other two lakes are day sailing events.
5. Are fees for the day (or overnight) over $25 per day?.
-Fees at all lakes to date, $15 to $25.
6. Is your crew usually family or friend?
-Usually family.
7. Do you race?
-Mostly.
8. What cat do you sail (most often)?
-Prindle 18-2.

-Bought it in 1987.

-Yes

-Fiberglass, sewing and some plastic fab work. Welding and sail work I hire out.

Night lights?
-Yup. Night sailing on a flat quiet lake is really fun.
GPS?
-Have tried it ocean racing, but the phone screen is not quite bright enough. Need better hardware.
14. Are you a member of a sailing group?
-A few- Multihull Fleet 42, thebeachcats.com, possibly the Az Yacht Club, when I can figure out how..
